With the actual PT Day of Service finally here, CSULB DPT students were excited to continue serving their community through the PT Month of Service calendar. This weekend we traveled to Westside Long Beach to Hudson Park to join the Filipino Migrant Center Walking Club.
The FMC Walking Club has been around for 2 years now and aims to bring together the Filipin@ population in Long Beach to encourage living healthy lifestyles through exercise and healthy eating.
We were joined for the PTDOS festivities by a local orthopedic resident from Torrance, two students from MGH in Boston, and one student from University of St. Augustine. The Walking Club was happy to have us spend the morning walking around Hudson Park with them as we shared stories. After walking, we came together for community announcements, followed by a presentation given by some of the 2nd years.
They helped teach about the importance of exercise, taught some simple stretches and exercises (all monitored by our all-star volunteer squad), and talked about what physical therapists do and how the members could get access to physical therapy.
It was a fun morning with many of the Walking Club members recounting their past success stories with physical therapists helping improve the way they moved!
Thank you to the members of the FMC Walking Club, especially Alex Montances, for welcoming us this morning! It was the PTSA's second time at the Walking Club, and it definitely won't be the last!
