This weekend was the California Physical Therapy Association Annual Conference in Santa Clara, CA. 18 CSULB DPT student drove/flew up to the Santa Clara Convention Center for a weekend of learning, networking, and growing as a future clinician.
FRIDAY
The lengthy weekend began on Friday with the Assembly of Representatives. Randy Stuck, a second year, acted as the student representative for the Long Beach South Bay District. Michelle Wynne and Matt Downey went as representatives for the California Student Special Interest Group, an item that was to be voted on. Dr. James Buenaventura, one of the CSULB DPT faculty members led the delegation as the chief delegate for the LBSB district.
Lots of great discussion and talk happened at the AoR meeting, but to keep a long story short...
- The Student Special Interest Group was UNANIMOUSLY approved by the AOR
- After legal counsel, the CPTA and COMPTSIG are going to encourage the use of the term High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) Technique
- There is a move toward giving PTA's greater voice in the CPTA
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
The meat of the conference took place on the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend. Over 250 students from all over California joined professionals for our state's largest physical therapy conference!
18 CSULB students made the trip to the bay area and they all had amazing experiences! The Conference provided many opportunities for attendees to learn from amazing leaders such Shirley Sahrmann. The day began with powerful messages from CPTA president Dr. Chris Powers and ATPA president Dr. Sharon Dunn. Students also had many opportunities with connecting with clinicians and getting up to date with current literature and trends. Ryan Gray, a 2nd year, described how the conference was "good way to understand what is happening now regarding current practice and the direction of our profession."
Many students left feeling inspired and motivated to bring what they learned at conference back to their classmates. Randy Stuck, 2nd year, said that it was "incredible to see the amazing work done by so many physical therapists and physical therapy students. There is just so much happening everyday in our field."
Saturday's festivities ended with the Student Special Interest Group's 1st business meeting as an official SSIG and their PT Pub Night at Bennigans.
